In the spring of 1762, The Social contract was published under great risks. Selling was forbidden in France, but it was somehow sold there too. This led to a writ to Rousseau's arrest, however, he was able to leave France.

He also couldn't go back to Geneva because both books were banned there too.

After, he moved around a lot (Scotland, Paris)

In 1770, he received assurance that he would not be harassed in Paris.

In Paris, he started writing the Projet de Constitution pour la corse, which he was never able to finish.

On June 2, 1778, he suddenly died of unknown causes. He is buried in Ermenon-Ville
- Today, sociologists and ethnologists refer to him as an "Apologist of Nature"
